The tower of San Giovanni in Campo nell'ElbaAn observation
tower constructed in the Xl century by the Republic of Pisa for the defence
of its Elba garrison. Its role was that of controlling the strait of Piombino
and surrounding waters. The tower of St. John, linked visually with other
towers and fortifications, formed a network of optical contact for the
communication of military and defence information. Damaged during the
course of an aggression and most certainly after its capture. Challenged
by atmospheric conditions and the negligence of man. The tower of St.
John has for many centuries continued its majestic dominance of the Gulf
of Campo.
