	Tutto raccolto sulla sommità di una dorsale isolata, il paese nacque come fortezza d'altura in epoca etrusco-romana, in posizione strategica dalla quale era possibile controllare i due mari di meridione e di ponente e, in alcuni punti più elevati, arrivare a vedere il mare di settentrione e la stessa Portoferraio, l'antica Fabricia romana.
	Auf einem Hügelkamme konstruiert, entstand der Ort als Höhenfestung zur Zeit der Etrusker und Römer, in einer strategisch wichtigen Position, von der aus es möglich war, das nördliche und südliche Meer zu beiden Seiten der Insel zu überwachen, und von einigen höhergelegenen Punkten aus die Stadt Portoferraio zu sehen, das antike römische Fabricia.
