Villa delle Grotte

In der Römerzeit war der Golf von Portoferraio Sitz zweier Ferienvillen von reichen römischen Familien. Die Überreste einer Villa sind bei der Linguella, direkt neben dem Archäologischen Museum in Portoferraio zu sehen. Die Villa delle Grotte (der Höhlen) wurde im des ersten Jahrhunderts v. Chr. erbaut und war schon im zweiten Jahrhundert n. Chr. aufgegeben. Sie wurde vom 4. - 6. Jahrh. schon im Verfalle begriffen, wahrscheinlich von Eremiten - Mönchen erneut bewohnt. Von 1799-1802 war die Insel Elba Schauplatz der Auseinandersetzungen zwischen Franzosen und der loyalen Garnisonen des Großherzogs der Toskana, unterstützt von elbanischen Aufständischen und der britischen Marine. In diesen schwierigen Zeiten wurden die Grundmauern der Villa abgerissen um dort eine Batterie von Belagerungskanonen zu installieren. Die Fundstücke der Ausgrabungen in den schziger Jahren sind heute im Archäologischen Museum bei der Linguella in Portoferraio zu besichtigen.

In Roman times, the gulf of Portoferraio was home to two holiday villas of rich families of Rome. The remains of a second are visible at the Martello tower, adjacent to the Archaeological Museum in Portoferraio. The villa delle Grotte (of the caves) was built in the first century b. C. and was abandoned early as the second century a. C.. From the fourth to the sixth century, now in ruins, was once inhabited, probably by hermit monks. During the period of 1799-1802 Elba Island was the scene of confrontation between the French and garrisons loyal to the Grand Duke of Tuscany helped by insurgents Elbanian's and the British navy. In those difficult years, the walls of the villa were cut to install a battery of siege guns. The artifacts found during excavation of the 60 are on display at the Archaeological Museum Linguella, Portoferraio.
