La dominazione dei Medici segno' fortemente la popolazione di Portoferraio nei confronti del resto dell' isola rimasta sotto l' ifluenza spagnola. Ancora oggi il dialetto portoferraiese e' piu' marcatamente toscano di quello del resto dell' isola. Ancora oggi a Portoferraio e' viva la tradizione delle confraternite dei Bianchi e dei Neri, testimoniata dalla presenza di due chiese e di due cimiteri distinti, proprio come avveniva ai tempi della Divina commedia.

Die Herrschaft der Medici hat die Bevölkerung Portoferraios stark gezeichnet während die restliche Insel mehr unter spanischem Einfluss stand. Noch heute ist der Dialekt der Portoferraiesen mehr toskanisch geprägt als auf der übrigen Insel. So wie auch heute zwei Kirchen und zwei Friedhöfe von der Tradition der beiden Brüderschaften der "Bianchi" (Weißen" und der "Neri" (Schwarzen), zeugen, ganz wie zu Zeiten der "Divina Comedia".
