Il paese è stato così denominato dal 1947 quando gli venne concesso di cambiare il vecchio nome di Porto Longone che lo identificava con il penitenziario sito nella Fortezza di Longone. Si affaccia sul Golfo di Mola, la più ampia insenatura della costa orientale dell'Elba con il suo porto ben riparato dove attraccano navi-traghetto e imbarcazioni da turismo. Questo paese di pescatori e di agricoltori è oggi una rinomata località balneare.

Porto Azzurro zählt 3.100 Einwohner. Der Ort wurde erst 1947 so genannt, nachdem Gemeinde die Erlaubnis erhielt den alten Namen "Porto Longone" aufzugeben, der den Ort mit dem Gefängnis identifizierte, welches sich in der Fortezza Longone befindet.
Der Ort liegt am Golf von Mola, der grössten Bucht an der Ostküste Elba's mit dem gut geschützten Hafen wo die Fähre und viele Yachten anlegen. Das ehemalige Fischer-und Bauerndorf ist heute ein bekannter Touristenort.
