Forte Focardo

In 1646 3000 pedestrian soldiers and three hundred French mounted soldiers disembarked on the island of Elba, after they had conquered Piombino and and they went to occupy Rio, the fortress of Giogo and last but not least Longone (today Porto Azzurro). Also France was interested to strategically favorable position
for the conquest of Italy. The Spanish, sight the numerical superiority arose themselves, but 4 years later they reconquered their dominions again, guided from Don Juan, son of Filippo IV. While the attacks from the sea from part of the pirates ones continued, and a little for these, a little in order to defend itself from eventual attacks from part of the French, the Spanish decided to construct an other fortress in the bay of Longone. Forte Focardo.
