Isola d'Elba

The fortress of SAN NICOLO' and the square BELVEDERE (FACCIATOJA)

The church of San Niccolò was delighted on the remainders of a Roman temple that was dedicated to the God Glauco. Inside the church with their special structure there is conserved some fresco painting from  the XV century. Opposite the fortress is the puplic square Belvedere, which was always called " Facciatoia " by the inhabitants of San Piero. The view from this square, proves its function in the service of the defense the population, but apart from it is really beautiful. From here one grasps the entire gulf and sees in the background the islands Pianosa, Monte Cristo and Giglio. Far away the Argentario, and behind Pianosa the mainland coast in the north of Piombino.
