CHURCH
OF SAN GIOVANNI IN CAMPO
At the road that leads from Marina di Campo to the Monte Perone
The Church of San Giovanni in Campo, situated to average coast of
the Monte Perone in overhanging position to the villages of San Piero
and San Ilario, constitutes the immensest Romanesque religious building
of this epoch that remains on the island of Elba. The building
leads back into the second half of the XII. century and shows
the same architectural characteristics of other elbanian churches;
only one rectangular church ship with halfcircle termination.The walls
inside the building are disguised with granite (the Granite quarry
is close of the church and today is still in operation). Interesting
also the front, which presents at its top side a bell tower is still
almost quite received. |
