Rio nell'Elba located in the northwest of the eastern promontory of the island of Elba. The adjacent municipalities are Porto Azzurro, Portoferraio and Rio Marina.
The municipality of Rio nell'Elba lies on both sides of a mostly dry lying river valley which slopes down to the south-east. The place is characterized by narrow streets and steep stairs, typical of a mountain village. Central Square is the Piazza del Popolo with the mighty parish church.
The name Rio nell'Elba derives from Latin rivus means the river. The through the narrow valley squirming creek has operated in the 19th century with his then still plenty of fresh water for many watermills. It enter into the sea in Rio Marina.
Rio nell'Elba is connected via a good federal roads with Porto Azzurro on the south, Rio Marina in the east, the coastal and beach town of Cavo in the north and the seaside resorts of Magazzini and Bagnaia on the west coast of the headlands across from Portoferraio. The local transport reached the place with intercity buses.
Interesting is the place to be with its narrow alleys, steep stairs and small squares, the ancient washhouse, the hermitage of Santa Caterina with the Orto dei Semplici and the fortress of Volterraio.
